Why this piece is awesome: Such a fun crossover idea, and well-executed. The character designs/styles from the two different canons are integrated well, and with a lot of thought put into how the interactions might feel. (I especially love Princess Pluto’s wry look at Hades, while Cerberus chews on her staff.)

Why this piece is awesome: It’s a simple, clichéd premise for a comic strip, but the artist’s gorgeous, expressive style and grasp of the characters really makes it for me. I am an absolute sucker for portrayals of the post-season S Outer Senshi as a family, and this artist’s take on that dynamic really works for me! I love the way Michiru is CLEARLY (but so cooly) setting Haruka up, and Setsuna’s immediate grasp of the situation (and exasperation with it), and adorable big-eyed Hotaru just … waiting for someone to answer her question already! Also the costuming choices are great, and I love the overall simple coloring and shiny shiny hair.

Why this piece is awesome: It’s a beautifully composed group shot, with thoughtful, thematic (50s-inspired) costuming tailored to each individual character. The body language and small groupings/interactions are equally individualized and delightful, and the asymmetrical layout effective and appealing. And the use of traditional media! It’s pretty and has that dreamy watercolor quality.

Why this piece is awesome: I mean, first of all, the style is just adorable, from the expressive, cartoony characters to the equally, delightfully cartoony game designs and cheerful color scheme! More than anything, though, I love that this artist chose to give us a glimpse of life in the Silver Millennium beyond standing gracefully amongst pillars or staring wistfully at the Earth; one that makes the past lives of these five characters feel like the same people we get to know in the show's present. (Cute individual dress designs, too!)

Why this piece is awesome: I have a huge weakness for senshi transformation sequences. There are a lot of great fanart interpretations of them, but I love how kinetic and joyful this one is. It sticks close to the original, but breathes its own style and life in as well. Captures some of the exhilaration I remember feeling when I was a teenager watching Sailor Moon for the first time!

Why this piece is awesome: I hardly know where to start! Haruka’s cocky, almost bored, smoldering expression and body language are just … unf. The textures and color palette are gorgeous, and the car is super sexy. I would totally hang this poster over my bed and gaze dreamily at it!

Why this piece is awesome: It’s an affectionate, deeply effective parody of what you might call the leveling-up trope. It makes me giggle every time I see it. SO MANY RUFFLES AND RIBBONS. ULTIMATE.

Content Notes/Warnings: I guess … mild undergarment warning? It’s not sexualized, but this is art of a bunch of teen girls getting dressed, so a couple of them aren't fully clothed.

Why this piece is awesome: Much as I do, unabashedly, love the senshi transformation sequences, I’m always extra charmed by art that imagines them getting dressed more “normally,” or generally lends more reality/texture/draping etc to senshi fukus. I also love the warm, intimate feel of this piece; the lighting, and the way the characters are mostly facing away from the viewer, engaged in a mundane task instead of posing. It reminds me, thematically at least, of some of Degas’ works, depicting backstage and behind-the-scenes tableaus among ballerinas of his day.

Why this piece is awesome: The artist wanted to draw Ami in some nice casual wear, to make up for all the terrible outfits she ends up in during the '90s anime. And succeeds! The outfit looks so cozy (and she looks so cute in it). I want one.

Why this piece is awesome: Starting off my Sailor Moon recs with a bang! I love "bad girl/girl gang" takes on the Sailor Senshi, because it celebrates in a different way something that I think is very important to the show's legacy ... that whole sense of empowerment and inspiration that a generation of girls and women (among others) got from such teen-girl-centric power fantasies. Part of what's important in the manga/anime/etc is the fact that in many ways the Senshi are deeply, unabashedly "girly" ... but that makes more blatant homages all the more enjoyable for me. Anyway, I'm rambling, but ... it's so in-your-face and FUN. :) The messy cartoony style and bold colors suit it nicely, and I love their faces.

Why this piece is awesome: I always love Madoka/other-magical-girl crossovers, and this piece is suitably epic for the two characters involved. Beautiful, subtle rainbow of a color scheme, with Serenity's dress dissolving into light and Madoka's into stars.

Why this piece is awesome: The downgrade of Pluto by the IAC triggered a tidal wave of jokes about poor Sailor Pluto's fate.
