Why this piece is awesome: A direct contrast to my previous rec! While this piece has Jaylah in the same pose, the warm colors lend a hint of softness to her. I might go so far as to say it gives her a bit of innocence. Her meeting with the Enterprise crew led her to an entire new universe, where she can explore and learn.

Why this piece is awesome: Reboot Mirror-verse! Both Kirk and McCoy are so sexy - Kirk's bare arms and McCoy's shirt riding up to show skin - guh! The expressions on their faces make the scene look more playful than violent, and I can totally buy that dynamic between them.

Why this piece is awesome: More colourful chibis? Basically. This is a different style of chibi, so less an attempt at drawing them as kids but still with the characteristic giant eyes that supposedly nature has taught us to find adorable. (So we feed and shelter our babies, say the evolutionary scientists.) This artist's style has changed somewhat over time, as styles do, but the early, straightforward and bright drawings always make me smile.

Why this piece is awesome: I did warn you I lean towards the unashamedly adorable, right? Chibis are, in case anyone needs this information, a manga convention where the subject's head is drawn larger than the approximate 1/8 of the body that would indicate an average-sized adult. This has the effect of making figures look childlike or otherwise cute. In this piece the artist has managed to draw the Star Trek crew looking like toddlers, and it is SO CUTE. There aren't a lot of lines, but expressions and tiny toddler body language are nicely conveyed.

Also, tribbles! Also, bright colours! Because I, too, am a toddler.

Why this piece is awesome: Hi! I'm your tour guide for Star Trek XI for the month of January. I love the Kirk+Spock+McCoy triumvirate, and the ladies, and I also love pieces which are pretty or adorable. Which this is. (Pretty, that is.) But I also love stuff that takes something or someone we see in canon all the time, and effectively transforms it. This piece changes the USS Enterprise into an anthropomorphic character - Jim's Silver Lady - without losing any of the lines that are instantly recognisable as the Enterprise.

Why this piece is awesome: It illustrates the differences and similarities between the two Chekovs so well! Old!Chekov with his almost frenetic Monkees-moptop cutesiness and campy Russian caricature, every action overstated in keeping with the show; nu!Chekov kind of dreamy and spun-sugar sweet, thoughtful and contained and authentically Russian. The blotty storybook artwork makes their postures and looks even more effective.

Why this piece is awesome: Uhura is like the BAMFiest of BAMFs, and this picture is a fantastic representation of why that is -- standing so strong and alert in the middle of the whipping solar winds, the quirk of her eyebrow and the lines of her body.

Why this piece is awesome: Spock is so pretty it's almost unfair. But what I love best in artwork is a sense of character, and these characters pop off the screen, completely in-line with the tone and feel of the movie. I don't know if the empty dialogue bubbles were a conscious artistic choice or not, but I interpret them as such from the deliberate and amusing layout of them. Very clever, and so deceptively simple-looking!

Why this piece is awesome: The soft blue glow of the control panels and screens, the softness of their expressions, the shift of Uhura's hip and the stillness of Spock's hands, the fall of her hair across her shoulder and the looseness in his. It's so atmospheric and lovely.

Why this piece is awesome: This is a rather heartwrenching comic, but very nice art. It is almost silent, but the expressions and gestures are spot on, and it is very rich in detail, so that the story impacts you. (Personally I'm pretending Kirk isn't really a ghost but just out-of-phase, or struck by some other science-babble mishap and will get rematerialized...)
