Why this piece is awesome: I love how regal and proud Dorn looks. His armour is very pretty.

Why this piece is awesome: This cheerful family moment packs a gut punch. Maybe the danger is implied already in the skeletal trees of the background. Or maybe it's pulled from our knowledge -- as we look into a moment never shown on screen -- that the grinning little boy embracing his father will grow up to follow the Nameless One, that the laughing little girl will follow her brother into such evil, and that their father, here surrounded by love, will endure so many centuries spurned and alone.

Why this piece is awesome: The moods, the characterization, the brushstrokes! Our gang are so fully themselves in this joyful group snapshot. Diana winks. Hank watches protectively. Presto checks anxiously. Sheila, Bobby, and Uni are a cluster of loving connection. And Eric sulks, just a little, keeping himself on the outside looking in.

Why this piece is awesome: This sneering Venger portrait floats above the implication of a battlefield melee, a hint of the scale of the suffering he inflicts, a much grimmer invocation of the cartoon's frequent trope of a brief vision of Venger's face towering against the sky after a defeat. This is the Venger from whom our heroes save the Realm (and we knew it all along, no matter what the Parents Television Council thought).

Why this piece is awesome: This one is for the LOLs. Venger, the show's Big Bad, flees, adorably, from the one being he fears: Tiamat, five-headed queen of evil dragons... but the artist has her white (ice) head sucking on a baby's pacifier, while her black (acid) head flaps its tongue goofily like a dog sticking its head out a car window, and her green (poison) head looks like it told them so but does anyone ever listen to it?

Why this piece is awesome: The artist captioned this painting: "Sheila is older, bolder, and with a brand-new attitude!" This still image is all motion. In a full-length portrait, a grown-up Sheila makes her iconic gesture -- tugging the hood of her invisibility cloak with her right hand -- dramatically shifting between visibility and invisibility against a sweeping, forbidding, Realm landscape. She steps out alone on the edge, above and beyond her fears.

Why this piece is awesome: This "cast photo" assembly of [almost] all the named female characters in the series is nostalgically faithful to the original animation while also firmly surpassing the original with this artist's smooth skill and just a hint of anime around the eyes. With the villains clustered toward the back, and the non-humans arcing left and the humans right in thematic groupings, this cheerful gathering seems to ask, "You remember us from Saturday mornings... don't you?"
